Meet Your BOND-Part 2: Learn the Parts

Here’s the second installment of the first BOND video program. It’s a vocabulary lesson and introduction to the parts of the machine. It’s likely that it’s a review for most of you, but that’s OK. I’m an old-school teacher (also something of an old schoolteacher 😉 ) and like to be thorough and sequential when I approach a subject.

I haven’t seen these videos in close to 20 years so I’m surprised by some things I’d forgotten. This was early in the day of our 12-hour shoot and I hadn’t hit my “groove” yet. When you see me looking downward toward the floor in front of me, I’m looking at the monitor which moved backwards to how I was moving. I found it disorienting and stopped looking at it before long except to check close ups.

I see the beginnings of  Sweater 101 in this video class, though at the time I had no idea I’d write a book. I like teaching skills in the context of making a sweater. I think it helps us remember better when we have an overall framework in which to “hang” the  individual skills rather than teach them  in  random order.

Onward we go:

  1. Enjoying these so much. My original videos are on VHS and I can’t watch them now. Thanks so much.

  2. Hi Cheryl, I bought my first Bond in 1984, brought it home set it up and started my first sweater. My son was living with me at the time. He watched very closely as young men will do when a new gadget is brought into the home. I left for work the next day knowing I would finish my sweater when I got home. My son had the day off from work. When I got home from work I looked at him. He had figured out the machine and was wearing the sweater. He looked at me and said. ” I finished it. I love that machine. I went and got some more wool for you. I am going out I have a date” Well since then I have bought two more machines as my son wanted that one. My original instructions are on VHS so I thank you for the videos.
I will be ordering your socks book. in the near future.

  3. I love your videos. Thank you so much for them.
I recieved a Bond knitting machine and I am excited to learn to use it. My clamps are very different from the type you demonstrate. I can’t figure out how to use the clamps. The only holes I see are on the ends. I am not sure what to do, where to find out the information on how the clamps work with the machine. Do you have any suggestions on where I can find this info?

  4. Hi Cheryl,
I just decided to try machine knitting because my husband is a big man and he ask me to knit him a sweater. I did and it took me about a month. When he asked for a vest I decided I’d get a machine. Without your videos I’m sure I’d never figure it out..

Your videos are awesome, I’ve watched a few others and they go to fast or leave out important steps. You are awesome and I can’t thank you enough for making them available without charge. I’m looking forward to learning more about your publications and how I can obtain a few.

I haven’t made a sweater yet on the Bond but I have made a swatch and I’m extatic!

  5. Thank you for this kind comment Sherry and I’m excited for you. If you’re on Facebook join us in the great USM group (good for other bulky machines too) and I have a Cheryl Brunette, Knitting Teacher page. There’s a lot of communication that goes on over there and lots of helpful people.
